Message from someone who`s story was simliar to mine

Hi ya,

Just had a quick look at your blog and the magazine article. You've had a really rough time but im glad to see that despite this you are still optimistic!

Looking at your symptons I had them all too, but unlike you I did go the doctors. Not that it helped as each time they prescribed me something different - including anti-depressants, Quini for cramp and Sleeping tablets. I didnt actually take any of them as I knew that it wouldnt solve the problem. I also went to to the opticians and was prescribed glasses about two months before diagnosis. Luckily eyes are back perfect now but for 8 weeks I was convinced I was going blind. To the point I could no longer drive or read and could only make out outlines of shapes. At this point, like you I still carried on thinking that I was suffering somekind of breakdown! In the week leading up to diagnosis I spent a night out with old Uni friends in London and drank copius amounts of wine. That night I was up for about 4 hours with the worst cramp ever. I collapsed at shopping and had to get the assistant to pack my bags, looking back, I can laugh about it now but I spent about £40 on liquids alone! I then drove home! I also had to get my husband to come and collect me when I was out on my horse in the middle of nowhere as I didnt have the enerdgy to continue...the list goes on...Oh and I had lost two stone and was down to 8stone11, which at 5'11 is not good either.

Finally I was taken to hospital by my Grandparents who had visited and found me in a complete mess as my Mum and Husband had both tried contacting me and couldnt get through. On admission my sugars were at 39.8!!!! No wonder I felt like crap. The most annoying thing was that 10 days before this I had had a bloodtests when my sugars were at 18 and my doctor called me to say they couldnt confirm the problem but I would need to go back for further tests to prove what they suspected but to not worry! He then called when I was in hospital for 4 days t ask why I hadnt turned up for a second bloodtest!

Oh well, enough about the ranting, suppose we just have to get on with it. Its good to have read about other peoples experiences though as all the press mentiones is about Type 2 and I do think the impact of Type 1 is a lot more difficult to do with!

Sativex

Had a another productive meet with my consultant... he is going to see if i can get Sativex cannabis based product to help with the pain relief as the tramadol and pregablin arent really having much affect now.. been on them for a while.. so will se how that goes.. you have to get it as a named patient and there is alot of red tape involved in getting in .. funding etc..
he asked if i would speak to a patient about the pump which i jumped at the chance to.. that went really well. we got on the subject of support groups and i gained some more support about getting one started around here.. the hard thing is getting people to know its happening... mmmmmm watch this space...

Documentry

had a good meeting with the students who are doing the documentry on me, so that is going forward.. they are using the angle of me and my photography so we will see how that goes..

Support Groups

Had a letter from the POOLE diabetes uk support group... tea mornings and skittle evenings wasnt something i had in mind.... If i was a young person with diabetes it would exactly entice me to attend.... one of the most asked questions i see on forums is.. can i meet with others like me... where is the support group... i really does make a difference when you meet up with someone else with diabetes and you realise that your not alone trying to control this condition.... my aim is to create a support group for younger people in my area... if your reading and have an idea please get in touch... feel a bit like a one man band at the mo....

WORLD DIABETES DAY

Well.. feeling a bit down.. trying to get something going ... local school already supporting a charity... Bournemouth Balloon which would have been amazing cant fund it.. diabetes uk wont help with funding on this either.. back to square one...

World Diabetes Day

I have been trying to get support form my local "support" groups and i use that term very loosely as i received very little support from them. One had suspended their activities until the end of the year, (it is october now) and the other did not know about The world diabetes day campain.. so there aint much hope really is there!!... Surely if one person see`s the Blue lights and is made aware of Diabetes then that is the purpose of it all, educating the younger generation in my mind is key, as for the the two local support groups i have spoken to, if i were a young adult i would not feel motivated to attend these meetings if i thought it was run by my Grandparents.. surely if we are not motivated as diabetics to raise awareness then there aint much hope else where... so this has motivated even more to do something for world diabetes day so i thank you for your negativity .. you have motivated me...

Seen my doc

Went to see my consultant yesterday.. talked about the how there is no support network for neuropathy sufferers.. he gave me a few pointers and has given me more motivation to get something started for people like me..
I also went to see a gastroenterology doc today..i am on 2 diff sets of antibiotics for the next month to see if that can ease the stomach problems.. sometimes when the stomach does not empty properly bacteria grows and adds to the situation... there is a common theme though when i see a consultant...
"its difficult to test for that" or we dont have a test for that" "or there is not much we can do about that"
but i am not giving up just yet anyway!!

Let me entertain you!

I have the honour of having a condition that affects my Nerves.. you cant see them... but boy is it here!!.. It is not a very well known condition so when people ask what is up with me i tell them, there always seems to be a blank look on their face. I mean it cant be that bad can it otherwise i would of heard of it wouldn`t i.. so i go on to explain what it is.. and as i do i feel like i am seeking sympathy .. which i am not just education.. but the list is so exhaustive.. as you are aware as you have read my blog and seen me rant about it time and time again...
My outlook on life has changed.. i am so much more aware of how people look at me no and judge me..
Sometimes i use a wheel chair.. i can walk... yes... but if i walk for any amount of time my feet hurt.. or my stomach cramps.. or i feel sick...or tired... but i have good days/hours and not so good ones... so too look at me i look "normal" .. but inside i am crying with pain..or anxiety of when or what will hit me next or will it come at once or will it just be the one part..or will it let me off for a few moments..i have given up trying to put a pattern to it all..but yes i can stand up out the wheel chair without help. and yes i can walk, and talk at the same time too... when you stare i can see... and that hurts too... kids i can handle and i expect it from.. but adults that stop and turn their heads and look down their noses...
i sprayed my mobility scooter for you as well so you have something else to look at when you stop n stare... i was thinking of putting a number plate on it.. but am not sure what to put on it yet.. answers on a postcard..;)...
When i get out of a disabled parking space i can here your eyes too you know,, and i put on a show for you and limp that little but more for you to rate me worthy enough to use the space..
I use a stick.. somedays i need it.. somedays i dont.. but i am here to entertain you and you pay me to live so i put on a show for you. The question what do you do for a living is in the top 3 questions you ask someone when you 1st meet them.. so when i say i am sick.. i can hear you...oh yeah.. so thats where my money goes then.. you look fine to me.. or lazy git...so now i have learned to try not to ask you what you do so you wont ask me.. well not straight away anyway..and when you ask now i say i do photography and volunteer.. then i say i am ill.. it softens the blow a bit and i feel a bit more accpeted ...
We all judge.. whether it be the colour of someones skin their weight, male female, tall short... its something that we all either have done or do..

Treat others how you would like to be treated

i must go now as i need to practise getting in and out of my whhel chair, walking with a limp with my walking stick and my scooter needs a re-spray... thats if my body will allow me... the one pattern i have found is it never allows me to have to much fun!

Invisable illness

Think about it....

I wrote down a list of my issues for when i last talked to my consultant

Issues with my body by Lee Nevitt

I find that when I see a doctor I sometimes forget one of my many issues or cant explain properly what I go through. So please see below a list of my daily problems

Stomach
Bloating…not able to eat large meals, have to eat small and offen, I.e cous cous, soup, low fibre food nothing stodgy.
My heart rate increases, misses a beat makes me feel nauseous, having to lay down and let it pass.. Having t pass wind to ease the pain, stomach increases in size, bloated..
Sometimes I will be able to go to the toilet and this helps but sometimes it stays there.. Having diahorria or constipation
This is one of the main challenges I have as the inly way to egt over this is to lay down and let it pass
Also not being able to get myself up without holding onto something, feels like I have no stomach muscles, not able to get up off the floor without pushing up or holding onto to something

Bladder
I have small empties not a clear out so small and often I did self cathatorise for a while but I do not have to do this anymore

Feet pain
This is all the time, I have a constant pain, some days/hours/minutes are worse than others, it realy does sometimes change that quick, one minute I can be fine, the next aftera few steps the pain is unbearable, having to use a walking stick for balance, wheel chair/scooter for longer journeys or when I am out for a perod of time. This affects my sleep, I find moving my feet, walking and massging them helps, and trying to relax.
Burning/electric shocks/ice blocks/sun burn/numb!/ walking on glass/pins and needles/

Sweats
Mostly at night, but I have to take to towel to bed as I pespire so much, sometimes during the day but mostly at night

Glands
When I eat I get a shhotong electric shock type pain in the side of my cheeks when I eat something, once my glands get goung the pain goes.. This is a short VERY sharp pain

Erectile disfunction
Not able to get an erection at all, have tried a viagra and another drug, these have not worked, this affects my personal life.. Not being able t have sex and also mentally HELP!

Sugar levels
My sugars affect the pain I am in, if my sugars are high then the pain is bad.. If I keep my sugars at a consistant level. This helps with the pain

Eyes
In the daylight somedays are worse than others but I have blurred vision, not beimng able to rad roas signs for example,

pump problem

went out for a drink.. only for my pump to start flashing.. low insulin!! then no insulin.. after a few drinks not a good sign... then trying to change the bloody thing at midnight, drunk!!! erm well wasted a line and got the insulin everywhere.. ahem... the woke up this morning at 4.. with a well stmoach issue!! turtle heads away lol... checked my pump.. and whoopi the bloody battery had died!!... so had to turn the light on and change that... now i am awake... toilet stops now... so tired.. stumbling to the bog... and watching the sun rise... its now 6 and prob stay up now... oh happy days!!

helpless

Feeling a little let down by the system really, not sure what i expect to happen....altough my consultant seems good.. i only see him once evry few months.. take the last visit.. i focused on my stomach issues AGAIN!.. so i was told to do a sample.. and the results would be done the following week... well 3/4 weeks lateri had to call my GP who then wrote to my consulant for me to get a letter in the post saying the test was negative and see you next time.. great thanks.. but this stull leaves me with no answer or light at then end of teh tunnel when it comes to my stomach problems... which i have managed over the past few months by my diet... no bread or heavy foods and tryin to eat as light as possible.. but i still get the bad days.. still the comstipation... still the diahorria.. still the sweats, still the palputaions.... oh he did give me a drug that was should have helped with my sweats... yes you guessed.. it didnt work....so i shall wait in anticipation for the next visit... IN NOVEMBER so i can tell him again about my stomach and agaon for another test.. and again for a negative result... dont wanna come across negative but it is what it is... and i have come to terms with the system and doctors.. and the idea of teh doctor knows best and is always right is a thought long out of my head...if you want anything done you have to do it yourself.. research reseacrh research... then check that.. then tell your doc about it.. for nothung to get done!

what you looking at!

Yes i have a mobility scooter!!..
NO i am not 64 i am 34
I feel like a circus freak sometimes when i use my scooter... so many stares, or even laughter at a young bloke on a mobility scooter.. do you not think that if i was able to get about without it i would!... i suppose its like anything really when something is different people will stare or have an opinion..
i suppose its justn the way it is... but just have a quick think when your head turns at the person who is different to you and remember that they like you have feelings...

the pump

oh yeah seen a doc the other day.. yet another one... so how can we help you... fuck me if i had a penny for every time i was asked that.. maybe i will get a recording and send it to them they may get the picture then .....

well gonna change my pain meds as they arent any good.. pain at the mo is just .. well and bag of shite"""
hopefully the pump will hlep level out my sugars and in turn help with the pain that seems neverending....

but where is the wondering drug.. the operation or the magic words....

here we go again!!

And so it begins.. tears heartache.. questions why...listening to sad songs and watching soppy dvds.... oh well
no blaming the illness but you did pay a part of it... the sleepness nights, the unlimted daily pain, the inability to have sex, the messing the bed, the bloated stomach, the weeing through a straw, using a mobilty scooter, nessun dorma is on the i-pod... reaching its peak..... which is what the relationship had got to............................................................................................. oh that was the ending bit......

so we will see now where the next chapter will take me!

not drunk just tired!! been a good boy not letting the demon drink take hold and ruin the mind.. and body!!

Happy new xmas year and all that

Well another year gone...

Its not been too bad pan wise.. although last night was a bit of a mare.. no sleep until about 6/7 this morning ... feet were playing up!!! not nice... but Dawn is so good.. tha massgaes really help on my feet when they are bad.. so if you are reading and have bad feet like mine.... massages are better than any drug i have taken so far...

there seems to be a break through on the food side.. i have food that Cous Cous is the way forward... low gi and all that gluten free.. seems not to affect me after eating so my stomach had not been as bad a s usual,, yipeeeeeee....... and at 4 packs for a £1 from asda.. can fault it lol

Life is good....

i am slowly coming to terms witn the illness and am making it apart of my life rather than try to fight it and get upset and angry over it all the time...

just gotta get on with it...

progress

Well...

Have met with another Doctor who had come across with a differnt perpective, i am on a monitor at the moment looking at my bllod sugars for the next 3 days, then looks like i will be going on the pump.. which means no more injetions.. and should help keep my sugars down.. and if they are down it helps with the pain.. so cant be bad...

ohh but having an endoscope next week .. you know the one where they stick a metal tube thinf down your throat!!! grrrrreat!!
taking asmaple thinga s well for celiac disease?? but he talked about my pain killers nd stuff as well and is open to change on that as well which is good news... so fingers crossed maybe a brighter future ahead after all

until next time xx

wheelchair

Well.....

Imade the decison to purchase a wheelchair to help me get out n about more, the pain in my feet was getting too much to walk about for any length of time, so now rather than being out for an hour and feeling grumpy and in pain, i now can stay out for a couple of hours and be ok for the evening as well, i suppose it was more of a pride thing than anything else but once you get over that then it aint to bad, i suppose its about weighing it all up and it has helped so what the hell!!

i also had a call from a consultant in sheffield about my gastrophrosis and they are trialing a drug so i shall be putting myself down for that amd will let you know..

Hi Lee,It's Kerry here, we've swapped a couple of emails recently!I've been through your whole blog - I can relate to everything you've mentioned, from the pain in the legs and feet, being unable to take a bath because it feels like acid on your legs, to the tingly pain in the glands in the side of your mouth!!!Please hang in there, things will improve. Although I've just had a transplant, my neuropathy did improve to a certain extent through time and strict glucose control. It's not easy, you get fed up with the pain, discomfort and the imposition of the intrusive treatments, but you CAN make some improvement. It sounds like your glucose is doing a similar thing to mine! Gastroparisis mucks up your absorbtion, so you can't really predict what effect the carb/ sugars will have on your levels. It's to do with erratic stomach emptying, apparently! Have you had a stomach emptying test yet? It's not very pleasant, involves eating scrambled egg on toast and drinking milk laced with radioactive ions!! Not what you fancy when you're suffering with Gastro! Then you have to sit on a scanning machine, in the same position for at least a couple of hours!! But, you do get an idea of how well your Pyloric Sphincter (valve at the bottom of the stomach) is working. Mine ws pretty useless, so they gave me Pyloric Botox. Worth asking about, I believe that it helped me. They inject Botox into your Pyloric Sphincter, using an endoscopy procedure, so it may not involve a hospital stay, it can be done as a day case. Botox has the opposite effect on the Pyloric Sphincter, than it does on the faces of paranoid women!! It causes the valve to relax and therefore allows food to be digested more consistently and quicker than before treatment, relieving bloatedness and feelings of fullness, nausea etc. Might be worth a go, it has no adverse effects and if it doessn't work it just gets absorbed by the body. It's not permament and wears off after a few months, but it can help your body to heal, leaving you in a better place after treatment, than before!oh yeah, before I forget, a drug, similar to Amitrptyline, called Duloxotine (I think that's the right spelling!) Has been found effective for controling neuropathic pain. I couldn't take it because of the nightmares and hallucinations!! But if you can take Amitriptyline, Duloxotine shouldn't be a problem! Sorry I've gone on a bit! I'm so glad to have found another autonomic neuropathy sufferer. I thought you might be interested to hear that my friend Jane, who also suffered from Autonomic Neuropathy, died recently from her diabetic neuropthy. She also had 'Diabulimia', but never got over it, she continues to withold insulin etc right up until her death. She was only 23 years old. This condition is serious, people die, why isn't there more awareness???Anyway, I'd better leave it at that!!!!Take care of yourself and hang in there!!!Kerryxxx

Pregnancy and diabetes

i have recently meet/spoken to a few people who have had gestational diabetes... quite common now which i did not realise so if you are reading this and what to know a little more then read below......

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes

Finding out you have gestational diabetes can be very frightening. Not only do you have to deal with all the emotions (the ups and the downs) and the questions that come with being pregnant, but also the uncertainty of this new-found condition. Fortunately, as with all types of diabetes, there are many well-informed health professionals to help answer your questions and to guide you through this very important time in your life. The more you know, the easier it is to accept and make the necessary changes for a successful and happy pregnancy. Let’s first review how you got here.
Somewhere between 24 and 28 weeks into your pregnancy your doctor most likely sent you to be screened for the presence of gestational diabetes. (If you were at greater risk for getting gestational diabetes, your doctor may have sent you earlier, at 16 weeks.) You may think this is too late in your pregnancy to be finding out about such a problem, but in most cases, screening before this time would be of little value. It is the hormonal changes (hormones made by the placenta that resist insulin) in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, along with the growth demands of the fetus, that increase a pregnant woman's insulin needs by two to three times that of normal.
Insulin is needed to take the sugar from your blood and move it into your cells for energy. If your body cannot make this amount of insulin, sugar from the foods you eat will stay in your blood stream and cause high blood sugars. This is gestational diabetes.
Gestational diabetes means diabetes mellitus (high blood sugar) first found during pregnancy. It occurs in three to five percent of all pregnancies (in other words, one in 20 pregnant women will develop gestational diabetes); so, you can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone.
In most cases, gestational diabetes is managed by diet and exercise and goes away after the baby is born. Very few women with gestational diabetes require insulin to control this type of diabetes. If you do need insulin, it will ensure blood glucose stays in the acceptable range, thereby reducing the risks to you and your baby.
Gestational diabetes should not be taken lightly. Immediate risks to the mom and the fetus are very real; however, these risks can be minimized with good care and follow up.
Ante-natal Care
Ante-natal care should be hospital-based, from a multi-disciplinary team
Individualise insulin regimens and recommend 4-times daily glucose monitoring.
Aim to maintain glucose 4-7 mmol/L and HbA1c within the normal non-diabetic range.
Remember insulin requirements increase progressively from the 2nd trimester until the last month of gestation, when a slight fall-off may be noted
Hypoglycaemia and loss of awareness is common in early pregnancy. Hypoglycaemia does not appear to have long-term adverse effects on fetal development
Ketoacidosis can cause fetal death at any stage. All women should test urine for ketones if blood glucose is high, if vomiting occurs or if they are unwell.
Delivery
The timing of delivery is individualised; in women with good diabetes control and no complications, the pregnancy may be continued to 39-40 weeks.
Caesarian section rates are often higher than in non-diabetic women.
Post-natal Care
Insulin requirements fall dramatically after delivery, therefore reduce insulin doses.immediately to pre-pregnancy levels, to avoid hypoglycaemia.
Encourage slightly higher blood glucose levels than during pregnancy.
In breast-feeding mothers, reduce insulin dose further once lactation is established.
Discuss contraception while the patient is still in hospital.
All women should be seen by the diabetes pregnancy care team six weeks after delivery.

Dr Tony Woolfson

Hi Lee,

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply and your offer of help.

Sorry not to get back to you sooner, but I've had a lot of replies around this, and I do a day job!

I have read your entire blog and was very moved by it. Not only do you have a bloody awful condition (the autonomic neuropathy is the pits), but you have courage not only to deal with it honestly but to share your emotions in public. I will certainly put a link to your blog on the site once it is up and running.

If I can ever be helpful to you as a resource to check things out, please feel free to contact me. Any time.

Any further thoughts you may have would be useful. I am also looking for an "advisory board" of some sort, who I can use to make sure I'm doing the best I can re site contact etc. Would you be interested?

Keep in touch - more in due course.

All good wishes,

Tony W

Hiya mate,

Just thought I’d drop you a quick email.... you don’t me but I’ve just been reading your blog on Diabetes. I can’t say that I can completely understand how you feel about all of this but I can empathise a little.

Back in January 2005 I too was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 35.... I’ve always battled with my weight, drank far too much during my time in the RAF and was a heavy smoker.... so I blamed myself completely for it. Once I was under the control of the Consultant at Hospital though, he informed me that it was just a fluke.... these things happen blah blah....

Anyway, almost three later.... things are good.... It took me almost twelve months to feel ‘right’ again. I had the night time hypos, the feeling sh!t all the time.... I can understand how you feel Lee but be assured that it won’t last forever. Once you begin to bring it all under control and your body adjusts to the drugs (and it will take a while), life as a diabetic will get better.... I promise ya!

Anyway... take it easy and have a great Christmas

Best Wishes

Martin

Get by with a little help from my family and friends

I know i do keep saying it but the support from my family and friends has been amazing... i cant really describe how everyone has supported me, and if you have diabetes or neuropthy you will understand me when i say it is a very lonely disease. Its not like there is a guide to follow which tells you this will happen tomorrow or that will happen... you really do have to live day by day.. cant really make many plans as i dint know how i am going to be the following day and sometimes even in the next hour.. i do seem to be feeling very sick recently before and after meals... am trying to eat smalll and often and not food that is likely to bloat me..which givesme an idea..... i am going to write a small note of my diet for you and what i try and stay away from.. and if you are reading this with the same issues then maybe it will help you too.. if not then its another way of passing the time at this ungodly hour!!

yes its late again.....

Best friends in the world

I now i kinda said it in the last video but i was a bit blurred... i have been so touched my the support i have had from family and friends.. i would not have been able to cope without them ALL..

The hardest part to deal with has been the emotionall side.. the pain to some extent can be controlled and to be honest i am so used to it now..

but its the stuff in my head that hurst the most.. noy being able to do what i want when i want as my body just does not allow me to do things ..

thats when i can count on my friends and family to help out... coming to see me all the way from bromley and driving back the same day..

CHRISTINA i knowyou wont read this as you and computers dont get on, but you have been amazing and your support well i cant put into words...

i cant mention everyone but you all have been influential in your own ways in helping me deal with this pants situation..

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

so god damn emotional

It cant stop welling up at the mo... i was gonna put a video on but i keep on blubering... turned into a right girl....

well i have had a few good days but feeling so tired .... i cant even walk down the stairs today
without being out of breath...i could sleep all day but i wont...

sent off my papers and stuff for disablilty living allowance, work has given me my last pat packet from them still waiting for someone to get back to me regarding PHI insurance...

More about diabetes

The Story of a RibbonDiabetes, often viewed as a "simple little sugar problem," is actually a very serious disease that affects 120 million children, women and men worldwide--and the number is increasing. This silent killer, which is a leading cause of blindness, amputations, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and other devastating complications, is desperately in need of a cure. The Gray Ribbon Campaign began with a small group of people who decided it was time to get the message across. And noting the success of other ribbon campaigns this group realized that diabetics (and those who care about them) should have their own ribbon---with gray representing clouds (every cloud must have a silver lining) and with the stone symbolizing blood. Thus the Gray Ribbon was born. The ribbon campaign has caught on and is spreading like wildfire...in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Greece, Mexico....wherever there is someone who has heard about the Gray Ribbon.

There are 3 main types of diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes ,

usually diagnosed in children and adolescents, occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that ensures body energy needs are met. Approximately 10 per cent of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. The remaining 90 per cent havetype 2 diabetes , which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body does not effectively use the insulin that is produced.
Type 2 diabetes

usually develops in adulthood, although increasing numbers of children in high-risk populations are being diagnosed.

A third type of diabetes, gestational diabetes, is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. It affects approximately 3.5 per cent of all pregnancies and involves an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child.

Is diabetes serious?

If left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can result in a variety of complications, including:
Heart dieasePeople with diabetes are at very high risk of heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke (cerebrovascular disease). In fact, up to 80% of people with diabetes will die as a result of a heart attack or stroke.
Kidney disease About 40% of people with Type 1 diabetes (juvenile onset) and 10% of people with Type 2 diabetes (adult onset) will eventually develop kidney disease which will lead to permanent chronic renal insufficiency (kidney failure).
Eye disease People with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts at a younger age and are twice as likely to develope glaucoma, but diabetes' effect on the retina is the main threat to vision. Called diabetic retinopathy, this effect of diabetes on the eyes is the most common cause of blindness in people under age 65
Problems with erection
(impotence) ED is defined as the persistent inability to get or maintain an erection that is satisfactory for sexual activity. Most men will experience erectile problems during their life. Although ED affects most men at some point in their lives, it is much more common in men with diabetes. In fact, in up to 12% of men with diabetes, ED is the first sign that leads to the diagnosis of diabetes. Fifty percent of men will experience ED within 10 years of diagnosis of diabetes. Older men with a longer duration of diabetes, poor blood glucose control, and who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease, are at highest risk.Nerve damageGastroparesis affects up to 75% of people with diabetes.
Diabetes is also one of the most common causes of gastroparesis (delayed emptying of the stomach). Gastroparesis occurs when nerves to the stomach become damaged or stop working. The vagus nerve controls the movement of food through the digestive tract, and when damaged, the muscles of the stomach and intestines no longer work normally, and the movement of food slows or stops.
Diabetes can be very damaging to sensory nerves (causing a complication called neuropathy), especially those in the extremities such as the hands and feet. This nerve damage can lead to loss of sensation in the feet, which makes people more prone to injury and less likely to be aware of injuries.

What are the symptoms?
Signs and symptoms of diabetes include the following:
  • Unusual thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Weight change (gain or loss)
  • Extreme fatigue or lack of energy
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent or recurring infections
  • Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Trouble getting or maintaining an erection
It is important to recognize, however, that many people who have type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.

PHI Insurance

Permanent Health Insurance (PHI)

The Permanent Health Insurance (PHI) contract is designed to produce an income for people unable to work due to ill health from any cause.
This scenario is much more common than most people realise, and a lot of people who have a problem get a serious shock when they find how little money they have to live on.
State benefits are sod all, and if you are employed you should find out where your employer stands.
He may have a policy that will pay out for you.
He may have a house rule of 6 months pay.
If there is a pension scheme you might have benefits from it, ( get them quantified, and remember to check your salary definition, esp. if you get commission, bonus, or overtime ).
There may be no formal system in place at all, and it is at his discretion.
They may sack you on the spot or simply give you the usual months notice.
Remember that at the end of the day , no matter how much he may want to support you , your employer is going to have to stop your salary at some stage simply because he won't be able to carry you. Find out where you stand.
If the amount is not enough see about a Permanent Health Insurance (PHI) policy.
Policy details
An income, which can be inflation protected, until retirement. You can normally insure up to 50-65%* of your gross income, (this varies from provider to provider).
Note, if you are arranging your OWN PHI policy, and are not going to be covered by a group scheme then in the event of a claim your income will be tax free. The policy will normally pay out some time after the date at which you stopped working. The shorter this period, the greater the premium. Most people opt for three months, six months or twelve months, according to their position. (Clearly if your employer will pay for six months you don't need the policy to pay out before this). The premium depend on age, occupation, and will normally exclude pre existing conditions.
Watch for the definition of disability. Normally an " own occupation" basis it can be, ( esp. for those in risky jobs, or for whom a small problem can be a disaster), " own or any ", which means that they can take a very tough view of any claim.
Also be aware that many policies are reviewable. This means that if the overall claims, ( not your individual ones, but those of all policyholders ) , are greater than expected they can increase the premiums across the board to all policy holders.
This means that companies can try to buy business with low premiums, only to increase them in later years. Because of this hazard the cheapest quote may not be the best. What you need is "own occupation" from an insurer who has had long experience in the PHI arena.
* If your PHI is arranged by your employer under a group scheme then benefits ARE taxable. However you can be covered for up to 75% of income.

Me and my diabetes

(forgive the spalling i wis naver vary gut!!)

3 months ago i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and have just been discharged from hospital with perifernal neoropathy. Which basicly means my nerves have been affected by the disease some have been severed and some just cut off completley. Not that i am looking back and saying "only if i had done something sooner" but if i had been more aware of the disease i proberly would not be if this situation now.i believe i have had the symtons for about 5 years now,Weight lossalways tireddizzy spellsissues done there if you knpw what i meanrashes/sores on my legspins and needles in my feetneed i go on...... but as a typical bloke i just ignored this and thought it will go away!!!i dont believe that there is enough awarness about the disease even though 180 million peopleworld wide have diabetes. its not about how much sugar you eat that causes the issue, ANYONE can get!!!!normally it is passed through the family but as in my case this is also not true.there are 2 types type 1 insulin controlled daily injectionsType 2 which is usually diagnosed in the later stages of life which is diet controlled through tablets. There is a big differnce between the 2.....my day consists of constant pain, numb feet, pins and needles in my hands, numb back, stomach problems!! both ends!!!!!! problems with my eyes taking 5 different types of drugs (all precribed of course!) constant visitsto the gp, watching everthing that i eat, making sure that i dont eat to much supary foods that will snd my blood sugar to high and if i do my liver kidneys and various other organs will shut down. Or not having enough insulin or suagr in my body that will send me in to a "hypo" which if not caught in time could send me into a coma and Die!!!!Not that i want to scare anyone nor is this a plea for you to feel sorry for me as for people who know me this is not the case.what i would like to do is make you more aware of the symptoms what to look out for and if you like ahve a look at the link and maybe donate some money, you never know you might help someone you kinow with the disease!next time you feel ANY of the symtoms i hav =e mentioned go check your blood sugars ouy with your Gp or Pharmacy. You never know.................Thanks for your time.......Lee

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

The causes of Type 1 diabetes appear to be much different than those for Type 2 diabetes, though the exact mechanisms for development of both diseases are unknown. The appearance of Type 1 diabetes is suspected to follow exposure to an "environmental trigger," such as an unidentified virus, stimulating an immune attack against the beta cells of the pancreas (that produce insulin) in some genetically predisposed people. Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes
Lack of insulin production by the pancreas makes Type 1 diabetes particularly difficult to control. Treatment requires a strict regimen that typically includes a carefully calculated diet, planned physical activity, home blood glucose testing several times a day, and multiple daily insulin injections.

The big three diabetes signs and symptoms

The big three diabetes signs and symptoms

The symptoms of diabetes can be reduced to three major factors. In the case of type 1 diabetes, these symptoms can develop quickly. However, when it comes to type 2 diabetes, symptoms may be far subtler and develop slower.
What are the big three symptoms of diabetes?
The three major symptoms of diabetes are: - Polyuria (The need to urinate frequently)- Polydipsia (Increased thirst and fluid intake)- Polyphagia (Increased appetite)
What happens when a person develops diabetes and reports these symptoms?
These symptoms are caused by the effect of diabetes on the body. If the level of glucose in the blood becomes too high, glucose is improperly reabsorbed through the proximal renal tubuli. This results in higher levels of glucose being present in the urine (glycosuria) and in turn increases the osmotic pressure. This prevents water being reabsorbed by the kidney, resulting in greater urine production. This causes the patient to urinate frequently. Water held in the cells is required to replace lost blood volume, and this causes dehydration and thirst.
What are the other major symptoms of diabetes?
Glucose absorption can change the shape of the lens in the eye, leading to an altered vision quality. This can lead to blurred vision, a common complaint that indicates type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Diabetic Ketoacidosis is another symptom of diabetes.

Diabetic neuropathy

Diabetes: Neuropathy
Introduction to diabetic neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy
Autonomic neuropathy
Introduction
A common complication of diabetes is damage to the nerves that allow you to feel sensations such as pain. This is called neuropathy. There are a number of ways that diabetes damages the nerves, but they all seem related to blood glucose being too high for a long period of time.
Diabetes-related nerve damage can be painful, but it isn't severe pain in most cases.
There are four types of neuropathy: peripheral, autonomic, proximal and focal.
Peripheral Neuropathy The areas of the body most commonly affected by peripheral neuropathy are the feet and legs. Nerve damage in the feet can result in a loss of foot sensation, increasing your risk of foot problems. Injuries and sores on the feet may go unrecognized due to lack of sensation. Therefore, you should practice proper skin and foot care. Rarely, other areas of the body such as the arms, abdomen, and back may be affected.
Tingling
Numbness (severe or long-term numbness can become permanent)
Burning
Pain
In most cases, early symptoms will become less when blood glucose is under control. Medications can be taken to help control the discomfort if needed.
To prevent peripheral neuropathy:
Work with your doctor to keep your blood glucose under tight control
To help prevent the complications of peripheral neuropathy:
Examine your feet and legs daily
Apply lotion if your feet are dry
Care for your nails regularly. (Go to a podiatrist, if necessary)
Wear properly fitting footwear and wear them all the time to prevent foot injury
Autonomic Neuropathy Autonomic neuropathy most often affects the digestive system, especially the stomach, blood vessels, urinary system, and sex organs. To prevent autonomic neuropathy, continuously keep your blood glucose levels well controlled.
Symptoms of neuropathy of the digestive system may include:
Bloating
Diarrhea
Constipation
Heartburn
Nausea
Vomiting
Feeling full after small meals Treatments may include:
Eat smaller meals
Medicines
Symptoms of neuropathy of the blood vessels may include:
Blacking out when you stand up quickly
Increased heart rate
Dizziness
Low blood pressureTreatments may include:
Avoid standing up too quickly
Medicines
Wearing special stockings
Symptoms of neuropathy of the male sex organs may include:
Unable to have or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction)*
"Dry" or reduced ejaculations *Note: Impotence needs to be evaluated by your doctor. It may be caused by your medicines or factors other than diabetes.
Treatments include:
Counseling
Penile implant
Vacuum erection device
Penile injections
Medicine Symptoms of neuropathy of the female sex organs may include:
Decrease in vaginal lubrication
Decrease in number of orgasms or lack of orgasmTreatments include:
Counseling
Vaginal estrogen creams, suppositories and rings
LubricantsSymptoms of neuropathy of the urinary system may include:
Unable to completely empty bladder
Bloating
Incontinence (leaking urine)
Increased urination at night Treatments include:
Medicines
Self-catheterization (inserting a catheter into the bladder to release urine)
Surgery
Proximal Neuropathy
Proximal neuropathy causes pain (usually on one side) in the thighs, hips, or buttocks. It can also lead to weakness in the legs. Treatment for weakness or pain is usually needed and may include medication and physical therapy. The recovery varies, depending on the type of nerve damage. Prevention consists of keeping blood glucose under tight control.
Focal Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy can also appear suddenly and affect specific nerves, most often in the head, torso, or leg, causing muscle weakness or pain. This is known as focal neuropathy. Symptoms may include:
double vision
eye pain
paralysis on one side of the face (Bell's palsy)
severe pain in a certain area, such as the lower back or leg(s)
chest or abdominal pain that is sometimes mistaken for another condition such as heart attack or appendicitis
Focal neuropathy is painful and unpredictable, however, it tends to improve by itself over weeks or months and does not tend to cause long-term damage.
Other Nerve Conditions Seen With Diabetes
People with diabetes can also develop other nerve-related conditions, such as nerve compressions (entrapment syndromes).
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very common type of entrapment syndrome and causes numbness and tingling of the hand and sometimes muscle weakness or pain.
Prevention of Diabetic Neuropathy
Keeping tight control of your blood sugar levels will help prevent many of these diabetes-related nerve conditions. Talk to your doctor about optimizing your individual diabetes treatment plan
